The First National City Bank began operating in Belgium in 1919 right up until shortly before the Second World War. In 1962, Citibank re-opened a main office in Brussels, followed shortly afterwards by outlets in Antwerp, Liège, Ghent and Hasselt. In 1969, Citibank took over the Crédivit Bank in Namur (specialising in loans and lease-purchase contracts) and the Financia Bank in Antwerp (with more diversified businesses such as insurance, savings plans and mortgages).
